5 TEAM CHALLENGE - PART 1: Road Trippin' & Road Trippin' 2022: Coast 2 Coast
Updated: Jul 25, 2023
ROAD TRIPPIN' (Joesoft, 2020)
In this game you play a millionaire, I'd imagine, who has the luxury of going on the road trip of a lifetime, visiting exotic locations around the globe and picking up tacky souvenirs. Fridge magnets are always a favourite. Trouble is, everywhere you go, the locals are insane drivers and want to kill you. It's based on real life clearly.
Paul Davies got our mate Clive to do the load screen, paying him in balaclavas. The game itself is a bit like Pac-Man in that you have to duck and dive to avoid the ghosts, played here by cars, while trying to grab a few pills, played here by souvenirs. You occasionally pick up something that makes the enemies freeze, which comes as quite a relief.
There's some nice loopy music and it's all very colourful and jolly. The graphics are tiny but they're alright. It reminds me a little of Run Baby Run, a cheap but cheerful Firebird title of old. Not bad for a little tinker, even if it doesn't quite live up to the promise of the load screen.
ROAD TRIPPIN' 2022: COAST 2 COAST (Joesoft, 2022)
Having tired of life on the road, you've come back home and fancy some more local and eco-friendly adventuring for a change, around Blighty's crumbling seaside resorts. You've got your moddy scooter all fired up and stinking of petrol, and now you must grab your stick of rock, and fish 'n' chips without the locals eating you.
This is kinda like the unofficial Speccy version of old BBC classic Daredevil Dennis. You work your way across the screen, then gradually down the screen, jumping obstacles, avoiding things and varying your speed regularly, as sometimes slow and steady gets you less decapitated.
I do like this. It's obscenely addictive, frequently frustrating, but a huge heap of holiday...erm, fun. Slamming round Skegness on your scooter, jumping over chippies, ducking under seagulls - we've all been there. How much more British could you get? Maybe crank up "Peaches" by The Stranglers while you play.
Pleased to see Clive is still keeping busy, but I do miss the ninjas...
