5 TEAM CHALLENGE - Part 5: Ninjakul & Ninjakul II

NINJAKUL IN THE AUIC TEMPLE
(Greenwebsevilla, 2018)

Ninja graffiti. Wasn't that a movie in the '80s?

In 2018 the fine folk of Madrid got Real and held a games contest, which in 'RetroSpec-t' (thanks) maybe they shouldn't have. Y'see, a gang of ninjae (that's the correct plural, I think you'll find) from the Wash & Go Clan (no sorry, the Chun-Go Clan) went and stole all the AUIC's dosh (Clive Townsend blameless on this occasion). The AUIC is a charity to do with old computers possibly (I'm going to start up a charity for those who suffer from having to read too many irritating comments in brackets (Wanna join?))

Ninjas vs. Pac-Man. We need to make this happen

But heroic Ninjakul sets forth for the Temple Of Love to get said readies back. There are 10 actually cute little piggy bank sprites to retrieve. Can he smite the enemies he finds around the place? Shuriken! But his morning stars are restricted so he must also use that Ninja stealth wisely as well (nah). He can do Ninja jumps too, being a Ninja and all. Ninja!

The temple has some lovely morning star design wallpaper
This is a nice bit of fun really. It's a bit like Tokimal, albeit not as polished, but that's okay 'cos it was for charidee, mate. Though by no means easy, it is actually possible to finish it, which is a welcome novelty. There's some good ninja tunery playing all the while, and on the whole it's quite the spritely jaunt, as someone posh might say.

Welcome to the Magenta Meditation Room. Urgh...

NINJAKUL II: THE LAST NINJA
(Pat Morita Team, 2019)

Cool screen, and he's such a cutie li'l guy. Aaaaahhhhh!

Woah now! Can you really call your game The Last Ninja like this? Admittedly the original never had a Speccy release, but even so... Hope Patrick Morita knows some good lawyers. If the game turns out to be any good, it'll draw even more attention to it. Yeeks.

In the prologue, Akul tries in vain to Stop The Express

Akul is the eponymous last ninja in his clan after his brother's death. Pretty rubbish clan then. Might also spoiler the end of the first game, oops. So he wants revenge on those responsible, the Gunshi clan (I hate those guys). He needs 4 scrolls to boost his powers, and there are also 4 levels of Hong Kong to search for them in before he can confront big boss Paco Romita. Did he transfer in from Europe?

A cat looks on as Akul needs a mega leap to reach that lever

This is quite a cunning platformer with a bit of combat thrown in for thrills. It's quite unusual in that you often have to rack your brains to figure out where to go next. I admit I was foxed, but "a Youtube DJ saved my life" and showed me the way. Hallelujah! All the game elements you could think of are good, so no-one can have any cause for ninja whingeing.

Ninjas attack, Gangnam style!
